Care Package Ideas for the Coast Guard

Updated Jun 17, 2026 · 7 min read

Sending a care package to a Coast Guardsman in the Coast Guard? The essentials are the same as any military care package — useful items, shelf-stable snacks, and a personal touch — but Coast Guardmail has a few specifics worth knowing. Here's what to send and how to get it there.

What to send a Coast Guardsman

Coast Guard tip

Sealed, non-perishable, compact items handle the long, irregular transit to a cutter best.

How Coast Guard mail works

On a cutter at sea, mail goes to an FPO address and reaches them at the next port call, so delivery can be irregular — plan extra lead time.

Use the exact address your Coast Guardsman provides (rank, name, unit/PSC, and the FPO line) — never a city or country. Seal liquids and powders in zip-top bags and include a customs form (PS Form 2976).

FAQ

How long does mail take to reach a Coast Guardsman?

Plan for 2–3 weeks to most FPO destinations — longer around the holidays, and longer still to a ship between port calls. Ship early.

What's the cheapest way to ship it?

A USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate box — one flat price no matter the weight (up to the box limit), at domestic rates.

A quick OPSEC reminder

Avoid sharing sensitive deployment locations, unit movements, or dates — online or on the package. When in doubt, keep it general.
