APO/FPO Care Package Checklist

Before you pack
- Confirm the recipient's full APO/FPO/DPO address (rank, name, unit/PSC, ZIP+4)
- Check current USPS restrictions for the destination
- Grab a USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate box (free at the post office)
- Set aside zip-top bags for liquids and powders
What to pack
- Shelf-stable snacks (jerky, trail mix, protein bars)
- Drink mixes / electrolytes
- Toiletries & wipes (sealed)
- Climate items (cooling towel OR hand warmers)
- Comfort & entertainment (letters, photos, puzzle book)
- A handwritten letter — the most-requested item
Do NOT send
- Aerosol cans / pressurized containers
- Alcohol
- Perishable or homemade food
- Glass containers
- Chocolate or anything that melts (hot climates)
- Anything that can leak
Addressing (example)
- RANK FIRST LAST NAME
- UNIT / PSC / BOX NUMBER
- APO AE 09001-1234 (AE=Europe/ME, AP=Pacific, AA=Americas)
- Use APO/FPO/DPO + state code — never a country name
Customs & shipping
- Fill out customs form PS Form 2976 / 2976-A
- List contents honestly and generally
- Seal liquids and powders in zip-top bags
- Allow 2–3 weeks for delivery; ship early for holidays
- Always re-check restrictions with USPS and the unit
